Elysian Fields is a collaboration between selected artists and the UCA GALLERY to produce a show of works that present the public with the dual nature of reality. The Elysian Fields is a place existing outside of time and space from where the artist often draws his/her inspiration from. The artist exists both in this space and the ‘real’ space.

Generosity of vision
Sunday, 02 August 2009
Had to plagiarise and remember this "[her] contribution construed as generosity of vision." Might find it useful for an artist statement some time...I can't find the source *&$#@!!!!!

SOAK BOUGHT UP
Tuesday, 23 June 2009
I received an offer for my entire solo show Soak to be bought, all of it, in one go, to one collector. I am so very honoured!

My fridge was kind enough to wait till the money was transferred into my account before it died, then the kettle died, and my car started limping and my cat coughed up an alien life form, no, not a hairball, something else entirely. And the credit card people won't know who else to send their monthly "pay or else" text messages to anymore either...

So to all pets and appliances, thank you for waiting before you broke or got sick!

SCHAAN, THE PRINCIPALITY OF LICHTENSTEIN
Tuesday, 23 June 2009
I have been invited by Dr Sarah Khan to exhibit with Pratul Dash in her gallery in Schaan, in the municipality of Lichtenstein. When I read that Lichtenstein is known for its dentures and manufacture and export of Hilti's, it sweetened the deal even more! I'm so very exited about this!

WHAT OTHERS SAY
Tuesday, 14 April 2009
"Your work represents the convoluted messiness of one's own insecure history and present" Lincoln Theo, PhD Candidate (Gender Studies)(UWC),(13/04/09).

"Having thought about it a lot I think the intensity of your work is what triggered the mental association with Artaud." Veronica Wilkinson, artist and critic for the Argus, (29/03/09).

"Jou werk gee my hoendervleis en laat die kaal kol op my maag klop." Ilana Louw, (03/09), which if roughly translated to English, means that my work gives her goose bumps and makes one's stomach throb.

Today, I feel like an Ouroboros. But I'm tired of my own tale...

PRESS RELEASE: Soak at Worldart
Thursday, 04 December 2008
SOAK

Adding final touches to series of artworks for a Paris exhibition, with another collection taking shape for viewing at Cape Town’s Worldart Gallery, Marlise Keith finds herself in a creative whirlpool. Luckily she is in the habit of living like a sponge, constantly soaking up, storing and processing the details of her day-to-day experiences.

“I’m constantly shuffling things around in my head. The fact that I find it impossible to concentrate on one thing at a time, obviously works to my advantage. I seem to collect everything that crosses my path: colours, textures, smells, moods, feelings, faces, body language, or even a split-second judgment of something or somebody.” For Keith, this is her point of departure. Her work originates from the “soak” that has become a way of life, allowing her to brood on whatever has fascinated her, until she can satisfy the urge to transform it into a work of art. As the content is being processed or recycled by means of free play and association, it becomes visible as a work of art in progress. Unexpected links are formed between seemingly disparate images, and new meanings are foregrounded according to Keith's personal sign system. Visual impressions seem to be entering into a dialogue as they grow and feed on each other, layering themselves into new streams of consciousness which in turn give rise to unexpected images and compositions.

Ink and gesso on board are the media used for a series of paintings that also hint at the art of drawing. From smaller pieces to unusually large works, they all promise to stimulate the imagination while offering an aesthetic experience. Viewers are cajoled into making multitude of interpretations while savouring beauty for its own sake. The content may be relevant and topical, inspired by the artist’s strong awareness of contemporary experiences of womanhood – although Keith does not pose as a torch bearer for any particular cause. In other instances the work springs from a need to experiment and have fun, but most often these elements complement each other.

From 3 to 30 April, aficionados of high quality contemporary art may share Keith’s fantasies when her latest Pandora’s chest is opened at Worldart in Church Street. There’s magic in the way Keith manages to coax viewers into suspending the bounds of their familiar contexts, persuading them to join her as she explores different ways of looking and understanding, and enjoying the trip. The exhibition is titled “Soak”, and for good reason, indeed. For more information contact Charl Bezuidenhout at 021 423 3075 or 082 901 5045 or charl@worldart.co.za - ends -
